A journey through history, a confrontation with silence. In Tussen wal en schip, three grandchildren—Jip, Kyron and Benjamin—take their Dutch-Indonesian grandparents to the place where they once set foot on Dutch soil. With patience, love and curiosity, they open up conversations about a past that was kept silent about for decades. How does that suppressed history influence their identity today? For many Indo families, the colonial past remains a painful and often undiscussed legacy. After Indonesian independence, thousands of people were forced to migrate, their stories tucked away, never to be spoken about again.
Now three young descendants are taking an important step to break that silence. Through meaningful conversations, with both tenderness and confrontational moments, Tussen wal en schip weaves these personal journeys into a larger story about colonialism, migration and intergenerational trauma.
