Grand Tour is a dazzling story of love and loss, of braveness and cowardice where both protagonists embark in a quest that plays with the tropes of melodrama and traverses history with a spectacular sense of cinema. Awarded the prize for Best Direction at the most recent Cannes Film Festival, Grand Tour is arguably the most complex and engrossing work by Miguel Gomes to date. Co-written with his creative and life partner, Maureen Fazendeiro, the film tells the story of Edward, a British clerk stationed in Burma who decides to escape from his fiancée, Molly, on the eve of her arrival from London. Refusing to abandon her promise of love, Molly embarks on a relentless pursuit, following Edward across Japan, China, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines. Set against the backdrop of a crumbling British Empire, Grand Tour weaves an epic romance unlike anything cinema has offered in recent years. The result is a dazzling story of love and loss, of braveness and cowardice where both protagonists embark in a quest that plays with the tropes of melodrama and traverses history with a spectacular sense of cinema. Set in a claustrophobic colonial era in constant dialogue with today– thanks to a unique use of documentary footageGrand Tour manages to translate in contemporary cinema language the most classical of all drama: the one of our constant battle with love.
