National Theatre Live: Dr. Strangelove
Cinema Forum Groningen
Nieuwe Markt 1, 9712KN GroningenSeven-time BAFTA Award-winner Steve Coogan plays four roles in the world premiere stage adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s comedy masterpiece Dr. Strangelove.
This explosively funny satire, about a rogue American general who unleashes a nuclear attack, is led by a world-renowned creative team, including Emmy Award winner Armando Iannucci and Olivier Award winner Sean Foley.
Over sixty years later, the humour from Dr Strangelove hardly seems to have aged. The story about bickering politicians and soldiers in their ‘war room’ is full of timeless one-liners, such as: ‘War is too important to be left to politicians.’ This is thanks to the brilliant screenplay by Peter George, Stanley Kubrick and Terry Southern. But it is also because the story got the best adapters imaginable.
Scottish writer Armando Iannucci, considered the current master of political satire, adapted the film for the stage and expanded the dialogues considerably. Iannucci made acclaimed TV series like Veep, about the US vice-president, and The Thick of It, about British politics. In 2017, in the film The Death of Stalin, he showed how high-ranking Soviet politicians sought to seize power after the death of Joseph Stalin.
Recorded live from the Noël Coward Theatre.
Please note, English spoken and English subtitles.
The film recording includes an intermission.
