The Sixteen
De Oosterpoort
Trompsingel 27, 9724 DAThe Sixteen is one of one of the crown jewels of English choral singing. Conducted by Harry Christophers, the ensemble performs Advent and Christmas music from (very) ancient and contemporary times. From sixteenth-century composers such as Bernadino de Ribera and Tomás Luis de Victoria, a bridge is built to contemporary tone poets such as Reena Esmail and Eric Whitacre.
In a wonderful mix of Gregorian chant, polyphonic church Christmas music and folk Christmas carols, The Sixteen sings about the birth of Jesus and pays homage to his mother Mary. World-famous chants such as the renowned Salve Regina and the Ave Maria are combined with lesser-known but equally beautiful gems.
The Sixteen is at home in more than five centuries of music and performs it all with equal passion and intensity. You won’t find many better ways to get into the Christmas spirit musically than with this top English ensemble.
