Landgoed Nienoord in Leek has a rich history dating back to 1525, when nobleman Wigbold van Ewsum founded Borg Nienoord to reclaim the surrounding peatlands. During the Eighty Years' War, the manor was occupied by 300 Spanish soldiers. It was later restored by Carel Hieronymus and his wife Anna van Ewsum. Jonker Folef and the noble Van Panhuys family also lived in the manor. After a tragic carriage accident that claimed several family members, the borg was never inhabited again.

Today, Landgoed Nienoord is a popular family destination featuring a deer park, a swimming pool, and the well-loved Family Park Nienoord — ideal for a day out with children. The estate is also home to the National Carriage Museum, which showcases an extensive collection of historic carriages.

One of the estate's most fascinating features is the shell grotto. According to legend, a maid who was caught stealing silver was locked in the small structure as punishment. There, she spent years decorating the walls with intricate shell mosaics. Only once the work was completed was she allowed to leave Nienoord.
