What begins as a tragicomic family portrait about the unique dynamics between two brothers – one a psychologist, the other a psychiatric patient – turns into a moving quest for their unknown roots.

In this intimate family portrait, documentary filmmaker Tom Fassaert observes the relationship between his father Rob (72) and his older brother René (75). Since their mother's death, retired psychologist Rob has been visiting his older brother René more frequently. René has lived in isolation for years in a house filled with belongings and old memories due to his hoarding habit. As they attempt to clear the living space to make it more habitable, the brothers grow closer. However, they are also confronted by old patterns and their shared, traumatic family history. Rob and René decide to find out together who their father was—the man who left them in a children's home as toddlers and then vanished from their lives forever.

In this moving and tragicomic family documentary, Dutch filmmaker Tom Fassaert – Rob's son and René's nephew – observes the extraordinary dynamics between the two brothers. In a sort of spiritual successor to his award-winning documentary A Family Affair (2015), in which he previously explored his family history, Fassaert attempts to find an answer to whether the cycle of intergenerational trauma can be broken. The result is a masterfully edited, funny, and deeply felt family film.
