Movies That Matter: Derek vs. Derek
Cinema Forum Groningen
Nieuwe Markt 1, 9712KN Groningen GroningenA humorous story about a serious subject. Against the backdrop of the growing crisis of biodiversity loss and climate change, this observational film follows the relationship between two neighbours named Derk over a period of three years.
In the idyllic English countryside lives a dairy farmer named Derek. One day, his neighbor, also Derek, makes a radical break with farming traditions. He begins to return his land to the wild. How does the community react when one of them turns his back on their way of life?
By distancing himself from the damage caused by conventional agriculture, Derek Gow unleashes a whirlwind of change. Wild boars ravage the fields, and more than a hundred ponds are dug. Gow converts barns and stables into breeding enclosures for a host of near-extinct native species to repopulate his revived land: storks, wildcats, mole crickets, egrets, voles, and glowworms. And he has beavers build lagoons. His neighbor, Derek Banbury, peers over the hedge in disbelief. "I don't know what he's doing. This isn't farming, this is just a dump!"
