Introductory Workshop: Sashiko – The Basics

Join us for an introductory workshop surrounding Sashiko, a Japanese mending technique.

During this 2-hour workshop you will learn and practice the basics of a Japanese mending technique called Sashiko. A centuries-old method used to strengthen worn fabrics and extend the life of clothing. This method is not only functional, it also provides a unique decoration created by you.

We will teach you how to start and finish your stitch lines (no knotting needed) and how to execute proper stitch lines. You’ll practice a basic pattern on a scrap swatch. You will be provided with:

• A sashiko needle
• Sashiko thread
• A water-soluble pattern to use on your own clothing

Feel free to bring your own garment to discuss how best to mend it. Note: this technique is best for woven fabrics like denim.
