Het Paleis - History, Studios, and Creative Spaces

History

In 2003, a group of artists formed a working group called Pamflet, which initiated the project "Join In, Buy a Studio." Recognizing the need for new studio spaces for artists, they developed a plan to repurpose the former Chemistry Laboratory of the University of Groningen. This building had previously been occupied by squatters and temporary tenants. With support from the Municipality and the Province of Groningen, housing corporation Nijestee renovated this municipal monument in collaboration with KUUB and under the guidance of the COB10 Foundation (Cultural Development Bloemsingel 10). The building officially opened on Saturday, September 19, 2009. During the grand opening, Petra Koonstra, a driving force behind the project, was awarded a ribbon by Mayor Peter Rehwinkel.

Studios

Het Paleis features 28 privately-owned studios and 37 rental workspaces for artists. These spaces cater to a diverse group of artists across various disciplines, forming the core of this art and culture hub. Each fall, the artists open their studios to the public during the annual Cultural Sunday.

Business Spaces

Het Paleis is home to 10 businesses connected to or working within the creative industry. These businesses foster collaboration and knowledge sharing within the building, creating a vibrant creative community.

Residences

Het Paleis houses 29 unique residences, renovated to preserve their historic character. Many residents are either connected to or actively work within the creative industry, contributing to the building’s artistic and cultural atmosphere.
