Experience the atmosphere of an English cathedral and witness how Christmas has been celebrated in England for over 100 years. On Saturday, December 23, well-known and lesser-known Christmas songs will ring out in the beautifully lit Akerk, performed by the choristers.
As hundreds of tealights flicker, bright voices will guide you through the Christmas story. In the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, short readings alternate with Christmas carols and communal singing.
The choir sings under the direction of conductor Sonja de Vries, accompanied by Sietze de Vries on the organ. The unmatched arrangements by David Willcocks in Sussex Carol, Birthday Carol, and God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen are interspersed with lively harmonies in This Little Babe from A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten. Herbert Sumsion compositions like What Sweeter Music by John Rutter and an arrangement of Silent Night by Sietze de Vries and John Rutter are also on the program. The Roden Girl Voices, an ensemble of more experienced choristers within the choir, will showcase their own repertoire. The youngest girls from the training choir will also join in for an introduction to this tradition.
