How Did Father's Day Originate?

In some parts of Europe, especially Catholic regions, Saint Joseph's Day was celebrated on March 19. Saint Joseph is considered the earthly father of Jesus. The first official Father's Day was likely celebrated in the United States on June 19, 1910. In the Netherlands, Father's Day was first celebrated in 1937, long after Mother's Day had become established. Cigar sellers encouraged people to give a box of cigars on the second Sunday of October, which was the original Dutch Father's Day date. Later, the celebration was moved to the American date in June because October was too close to Saint Nicholas Day and Christmas.
