Ben L’Oncle Soul
De Oosterpoort
Trompsingel 27, 9724 DAFrench soul singer Ben L’Oncle Soul rose to prominence thanks to soulful (and danceable) covers of songs like Seven Nation Army (The White Stripes), but his debut album, which appeared over ten years ago, immediately proved that his original work is equally remarkable. Motown influences are clearly evident, and since ‘Addicted To You’ (2020), Ben has been blurring the boundaries between R’n’B and hip-hop with a jazz inclination, a hefty dose of pop, and echoes of soul and reggae. Always intertwined with reflections of the music he grew up with; from Method Man to Lauren Hill via the Wu Tang Clan to Robert Glasper’s jazz and 90s R’n’B: Usher, TLC, Maxwell, and Aaliyah.
In early 2023, Ben released his latest work, ‘Is It You’, which contains his most personal material yet. With its questioning gaze, “Is It You?” explores the theme of spirituality, driven not by the desire for answers but to revalue the magic of this life that unites us. Thirteen years after a promising start to his career, Ben freely continues his journey on his own label, uniquely combining the charm of R&B with contemporary soul.
