Nieuwe Markt 1, 9712KN GroningenA socialist foreman is run over by a truck; the investigating judge suspects a right-wing conspiracy. Blisteringly suspenseful, still-relevant political thriller about the run-up to Greek colonialism.
Oppression is the rule of the day in this film that criticizes the Greek government of the 1960s. Z (Yves Montand), a leftist agitator, dies in what looks like a traffic accident. But given the political climate, the death of such a prominent activist raises troubling questions. Although it is too late to save Z's life, a postmortem examination reveals that the ruling party was behind his death. As the facts come to light, those who tell the truth pay the price for their honesty.
A powerful, nuanced critique of fascism, extremism, radicalism, social inequality and political corruption. Z won an Oscar, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award and the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, among others.
