Akerkstraat 11, 9712 BD GroningenJohnny Dowd is an American singer-songwriter who since the 90s has a unique place in alt-country and Americana. His music balances between country, blues, punk and spoken word, with a dark smile and a keen eye towards the borders of life.
Dowd started late with his musical career: around his forties, when he wrote his first songs in Ithaca, New York. His debute album Wrong Side of Memphis (1995) immediately made him a cultfigure. Critics describe him as “Willie Nelson turned into Mr. Hyde” and praise his raw voice, dark sense of humor and uncompromising storytelling.
Dowd released twenty albums since then, toured extensively in the USA and Europe and collaborated with The Mekons, Sally Tims, Jon Langford and others. His most recent work, Is Heaven Real? (How Would I Know?), returns back to the sould an R&B from his youth in Oklahoma and Memphis, but always with his own whimsical signature.
Johnny Dowd continues to be an artist who challenges, surprises and moves the crowd. A songwriter who you won’t forget once you’ve heard him.
