Some soundtracks are so orchestral that they seem made for the concert hall. That certainly applies to the epic, heroic music that Pinar Toprak wrote for the Captain Marvel film adaptation from 2019. From this a medley of highlights is heard. Two other composers, Rachel Portman and Debbie Wiseman, created a delightful romantic sound world for respectively Chocolat and Oscar Wilde, two atmospheric films whose success strongly depended on the music. Alan Silvestri’s closing music for Forrest Gump is a classic tearjerker, in Elmer Bernstein’s Magnificent Seven theme the sound of old Hollywood is revived. And of course there are famous signature themes, such as those of Superman, Mission Impossible and James Bond. It goes without saying that such music is wonderful for the orchestra musicians to play – so even without film there is still enough to see.
