Sugarcane

Nieuwe Markt 1, 9712KN GroningenAward-winning documentary (best director at the Sundance Film Festival) about a long-hidden history of abuse by the Catholic Church in Canada.
A weathered Mary with child overlooks the landscape of the nearby Sugarcane Reserve near Canadian Williams Lake. Here stood St. Joseph's Mission, one of the Catholic boarding schools where the children of the natives were re-educated to become “good” North American citizens. Nameless graves, discovered in 2021, were the first evidence of a long-hidden history of sexual and physical abuse and the disappearance of babies and children.
A national investigation followed. As archival staff ferret out documents and comb the grounds, co-director Julian Brave NoiseCat carefully tries to get his father - born in the boarding school - to talk. Other victims also confront their pasts. Slowly, the film exposes the role of the Catholic Church in colonized society. With the search for truth also comes the call for recognition. “Saying sorry is a start,” says one of the main characters. “After that, action must follow.” Sugarcane impressed at several festivals, including winning the award for best director in the US Documentary category at the Sundance Film Festival.
