Ennemaborg Estate & Oldambtmeer – 8 km Walking Route in Groningen
Overview
This circular 8 km route takes you through the historic Ennemaborg Estate and along the shores of Oldambtmeer. The walk combines cultural heritage, woodland wildlife and wild horses, and wide lake panoramas, making it one of the most varied hiking experiences in Groningen.
The Ennemaborg Manor
The route begins near the 18th‑century Ennemaborg, once home to Dutch artist Maja Wildevuur. The estate is surrounded by a formal baroque garden that bursts into color in spring. From here, paths lead directly into the ancient woodland behind the manor.
Wildlife Encounters
As you follow the forest trails, you may spot roe deer quietly grazing or kingfishers darting over the water. The estate is also home to a herd of Konik horses, freely roaming through the 150‑year‑old oak and beech woods. Their presence adds a wild and natural character to the walk.
Woodland and Landscape
The path winds through twisted oaks, bramble undergrowth, and quiet clearings. Depending on the season, the forest can feel almost fairy‑tale like, with reflections of bare trees standing in shallow water. Birdsong, including the drumming of woodpeckers, accompanies hikers throughout.
Oldambtmeer
After leaving the woods, the route continues along the shores of Oldambtmeer. From the cycle path you’ll enjoy open views across the water towards Blauwe Stad, a modern residential area built on reclaimed land. On clear days the wide vistas are particularly impressive.
Practical Information
The walk is mainly on unpaved trails that can be muddy after rain. Tree roots and uneven paths occur in the forest, so sturdy shoes are recommended. Benches are available along the route for rest breaks. A short section runs beside the A7 motorway, but this is unavoidable when extending the loop to 8 km.
Food & Drinks
At the end of the walk you can stop at the Coach House next to the manor (Hoofdweg 100, Midwolda) for refreshments.
Conclusion
The Ennemaborg Estate and Oldambtmeer walking route is a varied 8 km hike combining history, nature, and open landscapes. Despite the brief stretch along the motorway, it remains a rewarding and memorable trail in the province of Groningen.
