Lauwersoog in Groningen
Lauwersoog is a village in the municipality of Het Hogeland, located about 40 kilometers north of the city of Groningen. The village lies directly on the Wadden Sea and the Lauwersmeer and has a few hundred inhabitants. Lauwersoog is best known as a fishing village and as the gateway to Lauwersmeer National Park.
History and Culture
Lauwersoog is a relatively young village, established in the 1960s after the closure of the Lauwerszee. Since then, it has developed into an important center for fishing and recreational boating. The harbor forms the heart of the village, where fishing vessels dock daily and fresh fish is traded. Ferries to the island of Schiermonnikoog also depart from Lauwersoog. The surrounding area attracts many nature lovers and birdwatchers.
Accessibility
Lauwersoog is easily accessible via the N361 from Groningen and the N388 from Dokkum. It takes about 45 minutes to drive there from the city of Groningen. Thanks to its location by the Wadden Sea and the Lauwersmeer, Lauwersoog is an ideal base for hiking, cycling, and boat trips through this unique natural area.
