More About the History of Onnen
Onnen used to be a village primarily made up of cattle farmers and arable farmers. It was a self-sufficient village thanks to bartering, with the local community meeting its own needs. Today, there are still active farms that remind us of this time.
Every year, the Village House organizes the Liberation Festival, with decorated floats and lots of fun. This is one of the highlights of the year for the residents of Onnen.
A Beautiful Nature Area: The Onnerpolder
The Onnerpolder is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful spots in Onnen where you can also enjoy a lovely spring walk! This peat meadow area is managed by the Groninger Landschap, which works to preserve nature and the bird population. The Onnerpolder is an important area for meadow birds, and the sea eagle still lives here. The area was once owned by the Van Es family but is now managed by the Groninger Landschap, which is committed to preserving biodiversity.
