The Alma Quartet and pianist Nicolas van Poucke take you on a journey through two extraordinary works of classical music. The result is an evening full of captivating music, for both seasoned enthusiasts and curious listeners.

The Alma Quartet, all members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, opens with Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14, in which the composer reveals all facets of his musical personality. The music begins subdued and almost mysterious, as if you are slowly stepping into another world. Gradually, quiet, dreamy moments alternate with lively and sometimes even stormy passages.

Next, Nicolas van Poucke, one of the most important Dutch piano talents of the moment, joins the group. Together with the Alma Quartet, he performs Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat, one of the most beloved works in chamber music. This is music that immediately draws you in, thanks to its sparkling energy, beautiful melodies, and the occasional touch of melancholy. Nicolas van Poucke released two critically acclaimed Schumann albums. Paul Herruer wrote in Luister Magazine: “Lately, I have listened to quite a few CDs of piano music by Robert Schumann. Of all those CDs, this double album by Nicolas van Poucke is undoubtedly the best.” The Alma Quartet is working on a cycle titled The Late Quartets, linking Beethoven’s last five string quartets with Shostakovich’s last five string quartets. The first volume was released in 2024 and received international acclaim.
