In 2027 the Netherlands Chamber Choir will celebrate its eightieth anniversary and is already offering a foretaste of the festivities with one of the most beautiful and impressive choral works ever written: the Vespers by Sergei Rachmaninov. Profound devotion and timeless beauty come together in this monumental composition. From the hushed opening chords to the full, powerful choral passages, this music reaches deep into the soul. Rachmaninov himself considered it one of his finest works. This is striking, as he is mainly known for his virtuosic piano compositions. In his Vespers, or All Night Vigil as the work is officially titled, he reveals a different side: restrained, spiritual, and deeply rooted in the Russian tradition.
