As someone who thinks a lot about music and language, I have a conversation at least once a month about the absurdity of conjugations like ‘proto’, ‘post’, ‘neo’ and that kind of crazy crap. My favourite is still post-punk. Because that’s everything, but also really everything that comes out today which is alternative. Whenever I walk into a record store I don’t even know where to find the music that I want to buy, because a band that I like can be both ‘heavy’ and ‘pop’. My conclusion: music genre’s are bullshit.
So let’s fully embrace the absurdity of these conjugations. Really fully. Then we turn it around from being pretentious to fun again. Because music is also just fun. Luckily we’ve been doing this for a while and the AI-generated Spotify ‘Daylist’ titles are the icing on the cake that makes it almost a linguistic work of art. We’re all going in the right direction!
So, imagine there is a band from Amsterdam, that is the most classic 70’s punk you can think of. But, it is today so it is actually neo-punk, but, it also has some post-influences because it has garage influences and that is what Dead Moon is best at and they were mainly active in the 80/90s (the time of all post genres), so yeah, they are also a bit bluesy but that is also typical for protopunk like the Velvet Underground and that brings you to what this band is definitely not… And that is why, right, you call this band The Protos! Because indeed! Music genres have become absurd and let’s be honest, combining weird and music is secretly quite a lot of fun. Just like this evening is a proto-evening for 420. | HILLE
Update: Flash from the Basque Country also joins in. A band where I switched from “let’s see if it can happen that day” to “let’s fucking go!!” within milliseconds. Especially their song “Unidos” from their most recent EP hit so hard on the first listen that inviting this band was a no-brainer. Their self-titled LP has that weird edge we love from Aussie egg punk bands, and is mastered by none other than Maxime Smadja of Condor and Rixe. All in all, just straightforward primitive punk.| Robert
