In 2027, Philip Glass turns ninety, a wonderful opportunity for harpist Lavinia Meijer to pay tribute to this extraordinary composer who had a profound impact on her. In 2011, Glass granted her permission to arrange his piano works for harp. This led to two highly successful albums: Metamorphosis / The Hours (2012) and The Glass Effect (2016).

For Glass’s ninetieth birthday, Meijer, together with Cappella Amsterdam, curated a special program from his oeuvre, arranged for harp and choir. Glass’s clear, repetitive, and instantly recognizable style forms the starting point. The most beautiful excerpts from operas such as Akhnaten and Einstein on the Beach, film music from Koyaanisqatsi, and a solo work for harp showcase various facets of his oeuvre. At the same time, the pieces by Glass performed are placed within the broader musical landscape of minimal music, featuring works by Caroline Shaw, among others. The result is a program in which harp and choir both alternate and complement each other: from intimate solos to serene a cappella singing, from hushed passages to more rhythmic sections.
