Dub & Reggae Bangers

It’s almost time for the King’s birthday again. That can only mean one thing: PARTY! KingsDub on the doorstep of VERA, to be precise. Since 1998, this has been the go-to spot for the best party in town.

After several editions indoors in our Basement Bar, we’ve been back outside since last year. I’ve made a deal with the weather gods that it won't rain. (And if they don't stick to the agreement, we’ll dive into the basement anyway, but I won’t speak to them for at least a month!)

Who will be behind the decks?

Dré-Drive: Has been playing "Good Vibes Only" every last Saturday of the month at Cafe de Zolder for quite some time now: reggae Jamaican style, vinyl 45s only, and regularly featuring guest DJs. Dré has been spinning at this location for over 30 years and is certainly no stranger to the Groningen reggae scene.

Supa Hi-Powa: Also a familiar face. Discovered in 2000 by DJ Steely, he became a member of the Dub Inferno Sound until they stopped their monthly sessions in the VERA Main Hall. Supa plays everything from old Augustus Pablo tunes to the latest releases, always in a Good Mood!

Steely RoundBeat: Has been DJing for 44 years, with a career ranging from playing 8 times in the Chill Out at Dance Valley to... well, too much to mention. A small selection: In 1998, he founded VERA’s Dub Inferno Sound; in the 90s, he had a weekly reggae broadcast on the legendary NauticRadio; and since 2016, he can be heard every Thursday night on O.O.G. radio (stream) with his Reggae-Magic Show. A Studio One Records specialist through and through, he loves Authentic Ska, Roots, and Early Dancehall, but this afternoon Steely will mostly be spinning DUB—pure heavy hitters!

Josz The Boss: Another Dub Inferno DJ from the very beginning. Unfortunately absent last year due to a knee injury, but he’s back this year. These days he plays African music more often than reggae, but he hasn't forgotten his reggae roots (get it? roots!): it just means he’s even more excited. Word is the first Lee Perry singles are already lined up…

And last but not least: King T., the man behind King-T's HiFi Soundsystem, will also be spinning his tunes. His HiFi emerged from a notorious DJ collective. Recently heard at Sterrebos, De Loods, and more. Since his youth, he has had an enormous passion for sound, inspired by King Tubby; always analog. Just like Tubby, the soldering iron is an extension of his body as he builds his own Soundsystem. Musically, he favors Roots and New Roots. Steely recently said: "Whenever he’s somewhere with his HiFi, I always see other DJs playing and I don't hear T. himself, how come?" Well, now you will, at our KingsDub! Pull Up!!!

A massive line-up indeed—5 great reasons to walk down the Oosterstraat. Drop by, blow your whistle, wave your flag, and dance your heart out from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM on the street in front of VERA Club.

One Love!

Jos Z and Steely
