Every year, World Deaf Day (WDD) is celebrated on the last Saturday of September. This year, it will take place on September 27 in no fewer than five locations across the Netherlands. Dovenschap announced this in a video shared on social media this week.
What once started as a large event in a single location has now grown into a nationwide celebration at five different venues. Last year it was held in three locations, which proved to be a great success. Although Dovenschap prefers one central location, there were no candidates this year. Instead, five welfare foundations have joined forces to organize the event together.
The Origins of World Deaf Day
World Deaf Day was established in 1958 to stand up for the rights and interests of Deaf and hard of hearing people and to raise awareness of sign language. The day was launched by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), which was founded in 1951 in September. That is why World Deaf Day is celebrated every year in September.
