1UP: Arie + Mesofauna & more
Simplon Poppodium
Boterdiep 69, 9712 LK GroningenThe last UP of this season is almost here! It will be concluded in style, this time with a lot of yellow because it’s all about the banana. Get ready for an evening full of Banana coladas and banana games (yes, the new version of apple bobbing). Of course, 1UP wouldn’t be complete without a variety of artists and music, which is why we have not two, but four bands, plus two DJs! So come celebrate the existence of the banana, toast to a good summer, and conclude the season with music. See you there!
Piano Daniel as an artist has the ability to boldly entertain one half of the room while making the other half cringe. The duality of human nature is revealed through experimental pop songs. A laugh, a tear, and a Yamaha Portasound.
If you sometimes feel like an invertebrate person about 0.1 to 2.0 mm in length and adore gritty electro punk, you must come to 1UP to experience the music of Mesofauna. They have similarities to Vive la Fête, DAF, DJ Miss Kittin, the experimental Kap Bambino, and the famous water bears. In short, music to dance to and enjoy!
Arie stimulates the audience’s senses by fully immersing them in a unity of live music, performance art, choreography, theatrical elements, and performance styling. She does not shy away from introspection and self-reflection but rather invites others to join her through her art. Arie's work is raw and genuine. She moves through life from a connection with herself, creating from the depths and crevices of her soul. The performance brings about a balance of the whole. “As within, so without,” we might say.
This evening, you will also experience Arie’s project Santeria Retorica, where the audience will see moving mirrors:
We pass mirrors every day. We look at ourselves, critically or with love.
When we interact with each other, we often don’t realize that the other person is a mirror. They reflect us, our patterns, our unseen parts, and our pain points (or scars). When we become aware of this, we can learn to respond more consciously to something that could be a trigger.
We all carry some form of trauma and triggers with us, and through the lens of how the world mirrors us, they can function as a map to help us navigate. We can be there for ourselves in the parts that sometimes hurt and stay in contact with each other with more compassion.
To learn to deal with trauma, Arie has learned to work with many old parts, to let them go. This gave a sense of rebirth after old parts died off. She has incorporated this cycle of birth and death into her performance, tying it to the human cycle, generational patterns and/or trauma, soul death, and rebirth.
To escape the stifling expectations of today, Black Monsoon seeks solace in the dark with rebellious jam sessions with all the lights out. Inspired by the grunge and alternative indie-rock movement of the early 90s, Jacky (guitars, vocals), Marjolijn (drums, vocals), and Teun (guitars, vocals) go against the flow by creating music that is authentic, diverse, dark, and experimental. You will be overwhelmed by their intense sound, deviant guitar tunings, and drill solos that fully come into their own on stage. The trio has performed in underground venues in the Netherlands, Germany, and England. Additionally, Black Monsoon has opened for acts like Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), L.A. Witch, and Whispering Sons, and participated in Popronde 2019. The band’s name is derived from their favorite PJ Harvey song ‘Meet Ze Monsta,’ reminiscent of the early years of Nirvana, The Stooges, and Sonic Youth. If you are curious about how songs like ‘Broken,’ ‘Crows,’ and ‘Heaven’ sound live, be sure to check out 1UP!
