War criminals, perpetrators of genocide, and terrorists do the most horrible things, but are they really so different from us?

Who does such things?

Bombings of hospitals, mass slaughters of innocent civilians, and residential areas wiped out at the push of a button - these are all crimes that shock the human conscience and leave us bewildered. Who does such things? What kind of people are they? What drives and motivates them? Alette Smeulers has been researching perpetrators of international crimes, such as genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and terrorism for over 30 years. What goes on in the minds of war criminals and how do they view themselves? Are they born this way or made? And how can we stop them?
