From March 9 to April 13, 2025, the Kunstlievend Genootschap Pictura in Groningen will present an inspiring exhibition featuring the sculptures of fifteen philosophers, created by artist Eveline van Duyl. Each sculpture is a reflection of the philosopher’s personality and way of thinking, brought to life through unique shapes, expressions, and materials. Van Duyl uses everything from roofing material to mother-of-pearl, and bobbins of yarn to scouring pads, making each piece a one-of-a-kind representation.

Van Duyl shares her vision: “The idea that philosophers spend their lives thinking deeply, pushing the boundaries of thought, fascinates me. I want to capture them as real people—not as untouchable figures, but as vulnerable beings with complex thoughts and frustrations.” The exhibition also shines a light on female philosophers, whose contributions, in Van Duyl’s view, have brought fresh perspectives and new insights to the world of philosophy.

In addition to the philosopher sculptures, the exhibition will feature ‘The Deep’, a striking tapestry of the sea, complete with fish, birds, and babies sculpted from wood, adding a deeper layer to the show.

Hosted in the historic, atmospheric spaces of Pictura—a monumental building established in 1832—this exhibition promises to offer a thought-provoking look at philosophy through art.

Visit the exhibition from March 9 to April 13, 2025, to experience the fascinating world of Eveline van Duyl’s sculptures and the thought-provoking lives of philosophers.
