Bach Collegium Japan

Trompsingel 27, 9724 DA GroningenWhen the first notes of Messiah sound on 14 December, the Christmas season begins for many. This world-famous oratorio by Handel premiered in Dublin in 1742 and has since become one of the most beloved choral works in music history.
Messiah tells the story of the coming, suffering, and resurrection of Christ. Unlike in an opera, there are no costumes or staging: the narrative is carried entirely by music and text. Handel composed the work in just 24 days, a staggering achievement, and succeeded in striking an impressive balance between restrained arias, moving recitatives, and grand choral passages. The most famous section is undoubtedly the Hallelujah. According to tradition, King George II spontaneously stood during this chorus at the London premiere in 1743, a custom many concertgoers still follow today.
Handel’s masterpiece will be performed by the internationally acclaimed Bach Collegium Japan under the direction of conductor Masato Suzuki, son of founder Masaaki Suzuki. Expect sparkling choral fugues, intimate and nuanced arias, and a Hallelujah that is both majestic and buoyant.
