The film follows Nicholas Van Orton, played by Michael Douglas, a wealthy and successful businessman whose life seems to be in a rut. On his birthday, his brother gives him a unique gift: participation in a mysterious game that turns his reality upside down. What begins as an innocent surprise soon turns into a terrifying experience that forces Nicholas to question his reality.

The film is visually striking with its cold, impersonal images of the city and the use of shadows and light to emphasise the paranoid atmosphere. As in Se7en and Fight Club, Fincher manages to keep the viewer constantly in limbo. What is real, and what is not?
