Pynarello
De Oosterpoort
Trompsingel 27, 9724 DA GroningenIn the program Macho’s, Pynarello ventures into the rugged and unpolished landscape of Southern European Baroque music, in search of the macho and the anti-macho. Are machos always men? Can a macho also be sensitive? Is there a macho lurking in everyone? And is there anything that can be done about it? All stereotypes are explored, challenged, and played upon. The concert is one big battle between musicians, a breakdancer, and composers, in which everyone fights for their place.
Naturally, muscle-flexing music by virtuoso macho composers like Vivaldi and Tartini is played, but Pynarello’s own violinist/composer Jeffrey Bruinsma specifically investigates the anti-macho in an overture written by himself. Cellist Lidy Blijdorp explores the sensitive sides of machismo with special cello arrangements of the most poignant arias ever written: those of Barbara Strozzi, one of the first female machos to build an independent musical oeuvre in a male-dominated era. Naturally, the macho of macho dance styles cannot be missing: Utrecht breakdancer Neo Jansen shows that Baroque gives her just as much fighting spirit as her ‘own music’. Pieces by composers such as De Murcia and Locatelli are adapted by Pynarello into genuine hip-hop. What starts as a cockfight turns into one big party.
