Influential adventure classic considered one of the founding fathers of the adventure film genre. With live accompaniment by the James Whale Orchestra, who put composer Max Steiner's original score into a surprising new arrangement.

In this adventure classic, an evil count hunts shipwrecked sailors on a remote island. Big game hunter Bob Rainsford is the sole survivor of a shipwreck. On the island he manages to reach swimmingly, an even more severe ordeal awaits him. There, a Count Zaroff entertains himself by hunting down ... castaways. Together with Eve, another of the Count's victims, Bob flees into the jungle. With the only weapon: his own ingenuity.

The film's spectacular sets would later be reused for King Kong, while a significant portion of cast and crew also collaborated on both adventure classics.

James Whale Orchestra

The James Whale Orchestra combines cool American minimalism, bluegrass and its own unique romanticism. The music is precisely synchronized to underscore the film, using cutting-edge music production technology combined with live soloists for an immersive “orchestral” experience.

Founded in 2019, the JWO's unique concept of combining live soloists with music production technology has met with rapid success. The orchestra has appeared regularly at the Leiden International Film Festival, Noordelijk Film Festival, EYE Amsterdam, and many other theaters at home and abroad, among others. At the 2023 Noordelijk Film Festival, the JWO won a “Best of Festival” audience award for their production “Blackmail.
