The Love That Remains
Forum Groningen
Nieuwe Markt 1, 9712 KN GroningenA light-hearted and sometimes even humorous break-up film by Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason. Following his award-winning film Godland (2022), he takes a different approach with a story about Anna and Magnús, who are trying to work out their divorce together.
When parents Anna and Magnus decide to separate, a complex period begins. How can you divorce as painlessly as possible when the love has faded away? How do you arrange custody? How do you raise your children together as separate entities? This sensitive drama covers a period of one year, always in an everyday setting. Despite the complex and potentially heavy theme, this drama is light-hearted, sometimes even humorous in tone. These are “just” two parents going through a divorce, with a great love for their three growing children and their dog.
Pálmason's inspiration came from the small but important things in life: his children (who play the child characters here), nature and his garden. Panda, the Australian shepherd in this drama, won the Palm Dog at the Cannes Film Festival.
