When I did sound at Café Hunsingo during Winsummerfest with my Downstage colleague Wietse this year, I unfortunately didn’t get to see many bands live. But the three bands I was able to see are definitely worth writing about. And so was Rattenburcht, the band that performed in the late hours on the Rat Race stage in the local community center of Winsum.
Based on the name ‘Rattenburcht,’ I expected the most classic throw-a-bin-over-with-nails-on-old-pavement-tiles-and-that’s-our-music hardcore punk, but Rattenbrucht actually offers something new, which I can always appreciate.
Rattenburcht combines the heavy drone sounds of black metal with the heavy and rhythmic elements of hardcore punk and thus creates music that sounds so heavy, you feel like you’ve drowned in a tub of nails and tar and then have an old pavement tile thrown on your head. On top of that, they play in complete darkness, and the only light on stage is an old candelabra. This immediately gave me the feeling that I was in the basement of ‘The Phantom of the Opera,’ but instead of him wanting to be my romantic partner, he’s going to eat me alive. All in all, a perfect band for our basement. I’m looking forward to it! | HILLE
