Trompsingel 27, 9724 DA GroningenForget the crowded shopping streets, the whipped up Christmas commercials and, above all, forget the endless stream of always the same Christmas hits. Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge takes you back to the essence: stillness, togetherness, vocal perfection and timeless music that touches you right in the heart.
Choir of St John’s College Cambridge is among the pinnacle of the English choral tradition, which in itself is unique and loved worldwide. Since its founding in 1670, the choir has sung daily during the school term in the magnificent Gilbert Scott Chapel of St John’s College. For over 350 years it was “boys only” but since 2022 – fortunately – girls have been welcome at the ancient British institution as well.
During this Christmas program you will hear timeless classics such as O Holy Night by Adolphe Adam, the serene Ave Maria by Renaissance master Robert Parsons, the tranquil beauty of Hymn to the Virgin, written by the young Benjamin Britten at only sixteen years of age and the sparkling Gloria in excelsis Deo by contemporary composer Jonathan Dove. So Christmas can sound like that, too.
