Grand Theatre
Grote Markt 35, 9711 LVAs extreme right-wing leadership encourages rising class divisions all over the world, one of Chile’s most renowned directors takes the bull by its horns in this masterfully crafted political satire.
Don’t look a gift cow in the mouth
Political word wizard Guillermo Calderón, one of Chile’s most important writers and directors, returns with the sharp wit we’ve come to love. In a Chilean post-authoritarian wasteland, a woman is given a cow. Not the most practical gift, but she decides to make the most of it. She desperately needs money, so she’s thinking of milking it and selling the milk, or maybe it would be better to just kill the cow and sell it to the butcher. In a strange turn of events, the cow suddenly seems of interest to the police because it might belong to a criminal gang, and the woman needs to consider every possible option on what to do with this damned cow to not endanger herself. Rich with snappy dialogues and dark humor, VACA (meaning ‘Cow’) is an uncompromisingly urgent performance which delves into the complex authoritarian divisions of classes, 50 years after the dictatorship in Chile.
