Malta's Eurovision 2025 Performance Faces Controversy: Title Change and New Release

Malta's Eurovision 2025 Performance Faces Controversy: Title Change and New Release

Malta's entry for Eurovision 2025, performed by Miriana Conte, has caused controversy due to the title and lyrics of her song. Originally titled "Kant," the song included a chorus with a phrase that, although it means "singing" in Maltese, phonetically resembled an English word considered offensive. This similarity led the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to intervene and demand a change to both the title and lyrics. The new version of Malta’s song, now titled “Serving,” is expected to attract the attention of Eurovision fans, and many are curious how the changes will impact the performance. Will the new title and lyrics be enough to bring Malta to the top of the Eurovision rankings? Time will tell.

History of the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest

The Netherlands participated in the very first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 and has won five times. Corry Brokken achieved the first victory in 1957 with Net Als Toen (‘Just Like Then’) and Teddy Scholten’s Een Beetje (‘A Little Bit’) topped the scoreboard in 1959.

The third victory came in 1969 when Lenny Kuhr’s De Troubadour shared first place with three other entries from France, Spain, and the United Kingdom, which remains the only shared victory in Eurovision history. A fourth win came from Teach-In with Ding-A-Dong in 1975, but it was Duncan Laurence who took Dutch success to new heights when his song Arcade won the festival in 2019, topped global charts, and became the first Eurovision song to reach one billion streams on Spotify.

Visual and Audio Branding

The visual and audio branding for Eurovision 2025 was developed by Art Director Artur Deyneuve. Inspired by Switzerland's tradition of direct democracy, the central theme of the design is 'listening', conveying the concept "Unity Forms Love". Deyneuve explains:

"When we listen to each other, we find love."

The iconic Eurovision heart symbol represents dialogue, unity, and the unifying power of music. Pulsing hearts will be a core element, reflecting the millions of people coming together to celebrate music through the Eurovision Song Contest.

Audio Identity: Tradition Meets Modernity

The audio identity for Eurovision 2025 blends traditional Swiss sounds with modern beats. It features yodeling, the rhythmic drum corps of Basel, and the distinctive sounds of the Hackbrett and alpine horns. Artur Deyneuve says:

"We’ve created a bold, energetic track with uplifting beats and surprising musical effects to prepare the audience for an unforgettable experience."

Stage Design Inspired by the Swiss Mountains and Diversity

Renowned production designer Florian Wieder, who has Swiss roots, created the stage design for the 69th Eurovision Song Contest. Inspired by the mountains and linguistic diversity of Switzerland, Wieder says:

"Our goal was to create a revolutionary stage concept – an immersive experience never seen before at Eurovision."

Reto Peritz and Moritz Stadler, Co-executive Producers, praised Wieder's visionary work, describing it as a 'distinctive stage' that will forever be associated with Eurovision in Switzerland.
