Mahler 8 – Open Dress Rehearsal by the North Netherlands Orchestra

Due to the overwhelming demand for the sold-out concert of Mahler’s monumental Eighth Symphony, the North Netherlands Orchestra (NNO) is opening its dress rehearsal to the public.

During this final rehearsal, where the musicians and choirs run through the entire work one last time before donning their concert attire, you will hear the full symphony conducted by Antony Hermus, with more than 400 musicians and singers on stage. A unique chance to experience one of the most iconic orchestral works in the symphonic repertoire live, at a reduced rate.

About Mahler 8

“Try to imagine the whole universe beginning to sing and to sound. These are no longer human voices, but planets and suns revolving.” – Gustav Mahler

In the summer of 1906, Mahler had a vision. Overwhelmed by sudden inspiration, he composed his monumental Eighth Symphony. While Mahler often wrote on a grand scale, his Eighth – often called the ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ – is one of the most iconic examples of his vast ambition.

It requires no fewer than 400 performers, which is why it is so rarely staged. The NNO brings this monumental work to the north of the Netherlands, together with the North Netherlands Concert Choir, the Netherlands Concert Choir, and a cast of 8 international soloists. All under the direction of NNO’s honorary conductor Antony Hermus. Just as impressive as its scale is the way Mahler weaves every element into a rich musical structure. With an unparalleled palette of colors and expression, he conjures a symphonic landscape reaching for a higher dimension.
