Borg Welgelegen in Sappemeer is located on the eastern bank of the Winschoterdiep canal and stands as a remarkable piece of historical heritage in the province of Groningen. In 1647, the Borgercompagnie was founded by citizens of the city of Groningen to excavate peat from the surrounding moorlands. From the Winschoterdiep, the peat was extracted and transported, fueling regional growth.
Borg Welgelegen was established during this period of economic expansion. The estate once featured an apple orchard, and the elegant ornamental garden still remains today. This garden is open to the public and offers a peaceful atmosphere steeped in history.
A unique feature in the garden is a statue of an angel, inspired by a local legend. The story tells of a child playing on the heath between Muntendam and Sappemeer when it was suddenly attacked by a wild boar. Just as all hope seemed lost, an angel descended from the sky wielding a sword. The angel beheaded the boar and saved the child. Today, the angel is immortalized in concrete, standing with one foot on the boar’s head as a symbol of protection.
