The history of UEFA EURO Women's Football

First Tournament (1984): The inaugural UEFA Women’s European Championship was held in 1984 in Norway. It was a milestone event, and the competition was initially known as the European Competition for Women's Football. The tournament featured just four teams, and Sweden emerged as the champions, defeating England in the final. This first Women’s Euro marked the beginning of an ongoing evolution for women’s soccer in Europe.

Expansion and Growth: Over the years, the tournament has evolved significantly. Initially, only four teams participated, but as interest grew, the competition expanded. By 1997, the tournament expanded to eight teams, and it continued to grow in both size and popularity.

Current Format: Today, the UEFA Women's Euro is one of the most important competitions in women’s football, with 16 teams competing in the tournament. It is held every four years, similar to the men’s Euro, and serves as a qualification event for the FIFA Women’s World Cup
