Saint Martin's Day Groningen 2025

Sint Maarten in Groningen 2025 – Lanterns and Traditions

An ancient tradition that still connects the city

On November 11, Groningen, like many other Dutch cities, celebrates Sint Martinus, officially known as Saint Martin's Day. While in some cities the holiday is mostly for children, in Groningen it feels like a warm, collective celebration of light, sharing, and community.

The city glows with hundreds of lanterns made of paper, beets, and creativity. Children walk through the streets singing, neighbors wave from their doorways, and everywhere you hear traditional Sint Maarten songs.

The origin and meaning of Saint Martin

Sint Maarten has deep cultural roots in Groningen. The city bears his name in iconic locations such as the Martinikerk and Martinitoren — all reminders of the saint known for his generosity and compassion.

Today, his spirit of generosity is expressed through local traditions: making lanterns, handing out treats, community events, and charity actions for those in need. Sint Maarten in Groningen is still about sharing, caring, and celebrating together.

Kick-off festivities: distributing beets at the Vismarkt

The celebrations officially begin on Saturday, November 1, 2025 with the traditional distribution of beets at the Vismarkt. Volksvermaken Groningen has ordered over a thousand beets, given out free of charge.

Children and adults carve and decorate the beets, then place a tea light inside, creating a warm glow. The Fish Market is festive, with music, hot chocolate, and demonstrations on how to hollow a beet perfectly.

Lantern workshop at VRIJDAG – Wednesday, November 5

For those who prefer guidance, VRIJDAG offers a free lantern workshop on Wednesday, November 5. All materials are provided: beets, paper, tools, and decorations.

Sunnemeerten Parade Groningen – November 8, 2025

On Saturday, November 8, 2025, Groningen hosts its first-ever Sunnemeerten Parade. Inspired by the Utrecht parade, this will be a magical light and art spectacle that illuminates the city.

Before the parade, residents can join workshops at five locations to create light sculptures under guidance from artists. During the parade, these sculptures, along with music, theater, and performances, create a multi-sensory experience. Around 650 participants are expected.

November 11 – Saint Martin's Day

On Tuesday, November 11, 2025, the city comes alive. Children walk the streets with lanterns, singing songs like Sinte, Sinte Maarten, de koeien hebben staarten and Elf november is de dag dat mijn lichtje branden mag.

The celebration is more than just collecting sweets. Musical performances, church services, and social initiatives are spread throughout the city. There is also a collection for the homeless to donate coats, scarves, and blankets.
