The Vismarkt is one of Groningen's iconic squares.
In 1670 the Vismarkt was used to primarily sell fish. Nowadays you will find several restaurants and shops at the Vismarkt. And you can still go to the marketplace for fresh fish. But on the Vismarkt there are more stalls to buy food nowadays.
Besides food.... every now and then there is a market with antiques, books and LP and records. It is the place for the yearly fair (MeiKermis) and in October yearly the finish of running festival the 4 Mijl of Groningen, open-air performances and open-air concerts.
When is the Vismarkt Marketplace open?
Every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday there is a market on the square with various stalls. In addition to the market, the fish market is also used for other events. From the fish market you have a view of historic buildings such as the Korenbeurs and Der A Church.
Stalls full of character
With the historic Korenbeurs at your side, you enter the market. From left to right and from front to back you will see many stalls. Around you you hear conversations between the market people and the customers. About the cheese to choose, but also about small talk. That is what makes the market the market: sometimes taking a little longer. No self-checkouts, but personal contact. But the market is also the right place for a quick message. The fresh products are literally there for the taking.
Handpicked favorite stalls of Vismarkt
It is difficult to leave the Vismarkt without buying food. As you walk through the market, you notice the smell of fresh food. Some of our handpicked favorites are: De Marktslager, the Herbspecialist and Vismakelaar Poseidon and order there Kibbelingen made of Kabeljauw vis, , Because what is the Vismarkt without fish?
The best fries with LOVE sauce you can order at the Belg Waterloo. Thick fries and therefore great enjoyment.
And the great thing is: most of it simply comes from the region. This also applies to the vegetables and fruit from the Eemstuin. Pure products grow close to the Wadden Sea. Organic, unsprayed. And you can taste that. Here you can get rhubarb, kohlrabi and an apple for thirst. A little further on is the Koffiestation stall. Beans from far away, locally roasted. Just in the Oosterpark district. Or get fresh Groningen bread that you can top with Groningen farmer's cheese. With these regional products you are guaranteed to put something tasty on the table.
