St. Patrick’s Day in Groningen 2026: Celebrations, Irish Pubs and Traditions

St. Patrick’s Day in Groningen: Celebrations, Irish Pubs and Traditions

For most Irish students who have spent their entire lives in Ireland, moving to Groningen feels like stepping into familiar territory. Weather debates are inevitable here, with some claiming that the Dutch summer is milder, while others discuss the nuances of rain and wind. ;-) And of course, there are cultural differences, especially when it comes to beer, food, and the Irish traditions we try to continue here!

The Irish Community in Groningen

More than 300 Irish students are enrolled at the University of Groningen, and a vibrant Irish community thrives in the city. Especially on days like today, the strength of this community is evident. Put on something green, raise your glass, and enjoy a piece of Ireland right here in Groningen. Sláinte!

Today the city turns green! Various pubs and bars celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in their own ways, from live music to special food and drinks. Whether you’re Irish or just in the mood for a great party, Groningen offers plenty of opportunities to experience Irish culture.

St. Patrick’s Day at De Toeter 🍀

At De Toeter, the day starts early with a full Irish breakfast from 9:00 AM. Enjoy traditional items such as Dennys sausages, rashers, and Clonakilty pudding. Presale tickets are €12.50, and tickets at the door are €15 (while supplies last). After breakfast, two Happy Hours follow: the first from 1:00 PM and the second from 7:00 PM. Dress in green and bring all your friends, Irish or not, for a day full of delicious food, drinks, and festivities!

St. Patrick’s Day at O’Malley’s 🍀

At O’Malley’s, the celebrations are in full swing! Doors open at 12:00 PM so you can start your St. Patrick’s Day the proper way: with a pint in hand, good company, and an authentic Irish pub atmosphere. St. Patrick’s Day Special: Darby O’Gill And The Little People 🎬

For an extra dose of Irish magic, you can also attend a special film screening in Groningen. At VERA Zienema, Darby O’Gill And The Little People is showing, a charming classic full of Irish folklore and leprechauns. It’s the perfect outing after a morning Guinness or an Irish breakfast. Tickets are around €5, and the screening starts at 8:30 PM.

Irish Traditions: Tea, Biscuits and Black Pudding in Groningen

Tea is a priority, as local selections are often underwhelming. Whether you’re a Lyon’s or Barry’s fan, you won’t find them in supermarkets. But there’s good news for diehards: in Groningen, you can visit the small shop Kruidenier Wolters, which offers a selection of Irish and English teas, and much more.
