The best swimming pools in Groningen

My parents never had swimming lessons. At that time, it was common to either learn swimming by doing it or simply never learn! My father, who is now over 80, has always been afraid of water. Simply because he never learned to swim. However, he did learn me as a kid how to skate on natural ice. That was amazing. Looking back now, we were blessed that the ice never broke.

The Hook

When I was growing up, we had a big hook and, in my case, the swimming instructor would 'rescue' us when we were in danger of going underwater. I always felt terrible when she had to rescue me with that hook!

The Most Beautiful Indoor Pool in the City of Groningen

If you want to enjoy beautiful architecture, you can go to the Helperbad in the Helpman district. The building was built in 1925, and what is unique is that the architect M.G. Eelkema financed the construction himself. There is an adult competition pool of 25 meters (the Ranomibad), and many swimming schools let the children pass their A, B, or C diploma in the authentic pool. We as parents also stood there on the balconies in suspense watching our son dive through the tunnel underwater. The photo says it all, it's a beautiful pool!
