Nieuwe Markt 1, 9712KN GroningenA stunning film of beauty, mystery, sensuality and power.
From Marseille, Galoup looks back on his time with the Foreign Legion in African Djibouti. A hypnotic tale of repressed desires and jealousy unfolds, focused mainly on the popular newcomer Sentain. A lyrical masterpiece that makes an indelible impression on anyone who sees it. All have come here as strangers, yet Galoup (Denis Lavant), as a sergeant in his unit, seems quite at home here. He has a local girlfriend in town and a close, almost father-son relationship, with his superior (Michel Subor). He thrives on the army's strict hierarchy, codes and set rituals. Under his guidance, the soldiers do their laundry, iron their clothes and train in the desert.
The editing is so progressive that the final scene is considered by many to be the best in film history. This masterpiece has been around for 25 years but, sparkles and shines like new. Now to be seen in a beautifully remastered 4K version.
