Nieuwe Markt 1, 9712KN GroningenSurrealist nightmare and debut film by David Lynch. This surrealist nightmare put Lynch on the map with his unique film style and became a cult classic. Now showing in a beautiful 4K restoration.
The film follows Henry Spencer, a man struggling with fatherhood in a bizarre industrial world. His girlfriend Mary gives birth to a deformed baby whose constant crying drives her mad. Henry is left alone with the creature, which grows increasingly grotesque. Meanwhile, he wanders through a dreamlike reality full of strange figures and terrifying visions. Henry’s grip on reality fades.
The ominous soundscape heightens the sense of oppression and existential dread. The film is full of symbolism about sexuality, loneliness and the doom of parenthood. Lynch’s debut is a hypnotic, nightmarish experience that is open to countless interpretations. Eraserhead remains a cult classic that leaves the viewer with an ominous sense of confusion.
