James Caan plays a successful writer who, after a car accident, is “rescued” by Annie Wilkes, a nurse and his biggest fan. What begins as caring devotion quickly turns into suffocating obsession. Kathy Bates is nothing short of astonishing: her Annie is warm, childlike, comical and terrifying all at once. With subtle shifts in her voice and body language, she turns everyday behaviour into pure menace — a performance that rightly earned her an Oscar.
