An intriguing neo-noir tale by Lou Ye, with Shanghai's Suhzou River as its dramatic leitmotif. It's about a lover who throws herself into the river, only to return as a nightclub dancer. A gritty nighttime portrait of an old metropolis. New 4K restoration. Inspired by Hitchcock's Vertigo, Suhzou River is the account of an obsession, in which James Stewart searches for his dead lover. Simultaneously, the film is constructed as a frame narrative, seen through the eyes of an anonymous videographer, with voiceover. The shoulder-shot, restless images transport the viewer to the nightside of the metropolis.

The 4K restoration was created using the original 16mm A-B negative of the footage, sourced from the Kopierwerk Babelsberg laboratory, under the supervision of director Lou Ye.
