Austria, 18th century. The deeply religious and highly sensitive Agnes has only just married when it becomes apparent that she does not feel at home in her husband's world.

The emotionally chilly days consisting of work, chores and expectations soon become too much for her. Agnes withdraws further and further. Her own restrictions become more and more oppressive, her melancholy more extreme. Soon her only way out seems to be shockingly violent.
