Five people who hear voices undergo a new treatment: a psychiatrist invites the voices themselves to speak.

In the sessions, it becomes clear how the patients gradually gain more control over what is happening inside their heads. One in ten people hears voices. In this film, we meet five individuals living with this phenomenon. One person has a single voice, another has nineteen. One voice wants to protect, the other to kill.

The protagonists are in a therapeutic setting where a psychiatrist – out of frame for us – leads a conversation about, but also with, their voices. Who are they? Why are they there? What do they actually want? This is a revolutionary approach that appears to open doors for patients toward greater insight into and acceptance of what is occurring in their minds.

Not that the voices reveal themselves easily, as there is something at stake. Throughout various sessions, trauma surfaces that is directly linked to the origin of the voices. However, unraveling a hidden past is not where "My Word Against Mine" places its focus. The film primarily paints a fascinating group portrait – of the protagonists and their voices – reflecting the wondrous world of the human mind.
